People with disabilities in Cyprus face daily challenges that most take for granted: finding a restaurant with wheelchair access, planning a route that avoids stairs and broken pavements, or identifying which businesses offer accessible facilities. Despite comprising a significant percentage of the population, this community had no centralised digital resource for accessibility information — forcing individuals to rely on word of mouth, phone calls, and trial and error.
Beyond physical accessibility, the community lacked a unified platform connecting them to employment opportunities, social services, and inclusion programmes. Existing resources were scattered across government departments, NGOs, and individual organisations, with no single point of access. The unemployment rate among people with disabilities in Cyprus remained disproportionately high, partly because neither employers nor job-seekers had tools to bridge the gap.
Ablebook's founders envisioned a platform that would go beyond a simple directory — a living, mobile-first ecosystem that would map accessibility across the island, provide intelligent navigation tools, connect users with services and opportunities, and bring together the corporate, government, and non-profit stakeholders working toward social inclusion.
Techlink partnered with the Ablebook team and disability advocacy organisations to understand the real-world challenges faced by people with different types of disabilities — mobility, visual, auditory, and cognitive. We conducted field research across Cypriot cities and towns, auditing public spaces, businesses, and transport infrastructure to inform the accessibility data model and mapping requirements.
The platform was designed as a two-track project: a mobile app for on-the-go accessibility navigation and information, and a WordPress-based web platform serving as a content hub, resource centre, and community engagement point. Both tracks share a common data layer ensuring consistency between web and mobile, with bilingual support in English and Greek built in from day one using WPML.
We delivered a cross-platform mobile application with smart route planning that factors in accessibility requirements — wheelchair ramps, lifts, accessible toilets, step-free paths — so users can navigate confidently to any mapped destination. The app provides location-based discovery of accessible businesses and public spaces, with detailed accessibility profiles for each venue covering entry access, interior navigation, toilet facilities, and parking.
The web platform serves as the broader ecosystem hub, hosting the AbleCard programme that connects cardholders with partner benefits, the AbleTalks community initiative bringing together stakeholders around accessibility topics, a resource centre with guides for form completion and documentation, and news coverage of accessibility developments across Cyprus. The platform's partnership framework has attracted major Cypriot organisations — Bank of Cyprus, CYTA, IKEA Cyprus, EKO, doValue, and InfoCredit Group — creating a network of accessibility-committed businesses visible directly within the app.
