Forgotten child incidents in nurseries and kindergartens, while rare, carry devastating consequences. Across Europe, regulatory bodies have increasingly called for systematic solutions to prevent children from being left unaccounted for during the school day. In Cyprus, nurseries and kindergartens relied on paper-based attendance logs and informal communication between staff and parents, a process that depended entirely on human diligence and left no safety net for the inevitable days when something was missed.
The core problem was simple but critical: if a child doesn't arrive at nursery and no one notices, hours can pass before anyone realises. Parents assume their child is at school, and staff assume the child is at home. There was no automated system to close this gap.
Techlink identified this as both a social responsibility opportunity and a viable SaaS product. We applied to the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) for co-funding to develop a platform that would automate the detection of unexpected absences and immediately notify parents, removing the reliance on manual processes.
We started with field research across nurseries in Nicosia, interviewing teachers, administrators, and parents to understand the daily attendance workflow, the pain points, and the constraints of a nursery environment where staff are busy managing children, not operating software. The interface had to be fast enough to use during morning drop-off chaos, reliable enough that staff would trust it, and simple enough to require zero training.
The architecture was designed as a multi-tenant SaaS platform from day one, using the Azure SaaS Development Kit to handle tenant isolation, subscription management, and infrastructure provisioning. We chose Sinch for SMS delivery and SendGrid for email, ensuring alerts reached parents through multiple channels simultaneously.
SafeStart is a web-based platform where teachers log each child's arrival during morning drop-off through a clean, minimal interface designed for speed. If a child has not been marked present by a configurable cut-off time and no parent has notified the nursery of a planned absence, the system automatically sends SMS and email alerts to the child's registered contacts.
The admin dashboard gives nursery owners and administrators a centralised view of attendance across all classrooms, a full history of alerts sent and parent responses received, and compliance reports that can be shared with regulatory authorities. Each nursery operates in its own isolated tenant, with its own branding, classrooms, and parent contact lists.
The platform is designed for future expansion, including planned NFC tag integration where tags on children's bags would be scanned on arrival, eliminating manual attendance entry entirely.
